My last post about kin self-care seemed to resonate with some people, so I made a list of things I consider to be actual kin-related self care.
-Go running. Run for a long time–as long as you can keep yourself upright, keep going. For me, that’s usually a bit over an hour on a treadmill. Exercise has been proven to improve cognitive function and is a great way to relieve stress.
-Go fishing (if you can/want to). Lots of carnivore theriotypes might enjoy actually catching and eating their own food. A lot of food-related self-care posts don’t take into account the fact that these animals aren’t just eating the food, they’re hunting for it themselves. Even non-seafood eating therians would likely enjoy this.
-Two words: morning yoga. Get up before/during the sunrise and try out a few simple poses. If you’re up before everyone else, there’s no need to maintain a facade of human-ness–don’t worry about letting out impulses when no one’s around to see them.
-Combine animal and human while working. Sometimes you will be too busy to dedicate any time to self-care–instead of completely neglecting your needs, try this! Find an odd place to do your work. If you’re a feline or an avian (or anything related to climbing/flying,) find a spot up high to perch and do your work. For example, on a tabletop or on top of the fridge could work. For burrowing/nesting therians, try working under tables or desks. Even getting stuff done while in the park is a good start.
I’ll add more if I can think of them.
